Known as the town of a thousand wells, Salaga still bask in its glory of having the most wells and baths. But behind each well is the untold story of resilience, survival, and determination of sons and daughters of Africa who became commodities in the hands of their fellow humans.
Nestled in a green valley, some 62 wells and baths hand dug by slaves lay in their original states as abandoned by the slave masters after the abolishing of slave trade.
The wells and baths were the cleansing area for slaves that were deemed unpleasant to be traded in Africa's largest slave market.
Slaves who survived the draconian walk from the Sahel through to the Upper East and West of Ghana were traded in the market.
The museum hold the memories of the handwork of the slaves showcasing some of the equipment used in digging the wells and baths.
Salaga is referred to as the Timbuktu of West Africa due to its vibrant economical attributes during the transatlantic slave era. The lake in Makango connected the north and south of Ghana through Yeji making the transit process seamless.
