6 Things to Know About Afua Kyei — The UK Most Influential Black Person on the 2026 Powerlist

The Powerlist 2026, which celebrates the 100 most influential Black Britons, features some of the UK’s most accomplished trailblazers and Afua Kyei stands tall at No. 1. Bank of England’s Chief Financial Officer, Afua’s rise is a story of excellence, determination, purpose, and influence on the global stage. Here are ten things you should know about her:

 

  1. Afua oversees the financial governance of the Bank’s 1 trillion balance sheet. She also played a pivotal role in steering funding reforms and spearheading upgrades to the UK’s critical payments infrastructure. 
  2. She is also an outspoken advocate across the financial sector. 
  3. After studying at the University of Oxford, she was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship by Princeton University in organic chemistry. 
  4. She began her career in investment banking during the global financial crisis and later became Chief Financial Officer for Mortgages at Barclays before joining the Bank of England in 2019, where she has since become integral to the Bank’s leadership and decision-making. 
  5. She was recruited to the Bank by Mark Carney, then the Canadian Prime Minister and former Governor of the Bank of England. 
  6. Kyei succeeds tech CEO Dean Forbes, who topped last year’s Powerlist, joining an elite group of leaders recognized for shaping Britain’s future across business, culture, and public life.
