Over 500 African-American members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated have arrived in Ghana under the Beyond the Return initiative.
Their visit is about reconnecting with their roots, honoring shared history, and building strong relationships that go beyond the holiday season.
This visit is a meaningful step toward keeping diaspora engagement active throughout the year, not just in December. It also brings cultural pride and real economic benefits to Ghana. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first African-American sorority, founded at Howard University in the United States.
Speaking on the impact of the visit, the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana described it as a major boost to the economy. He explained that the visitors are high spenders who support hotels, food services, transportation, and local craft markets. According to him, if each person spends about $3,000 over two weeks, the total amount coming into the economy is significant.
He also noted that January is usually a slow period after the busy December season, so this visit is especially helpful. The spending goes directly to the informal sector, helping local businesses and communities during a usually quiet time.
President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Danette Anthony Reed, also shared her thoughts. He explained that January holds special meaning in African-American history, which makes it an important time for travel and celebration.
He added that if the right connections are made, thousands more people would be interested in visiting Ghana during this period. He also mentioned that other organizations are ready to partner in similar efforts, making it possible to plan activities throughout the year. According to him, working together in this way can create lasting impact and stronger ties between Ghana and the African diaspora.
