If seeing elephants in their natural habitat is on your Ghana travel bucket list, there are several protected areas worth exploring. From the savannah landscapes of northern Ghana to forest ecosystems in the southwest, these destinations offer opportunities to experience Ghana’s wildlife responsibly. Here are some of the best places to see elephants in Ghana.
1. Mole National Park
For most visitors, Mole National Park is the top destination for elephant viewing in Ghana. Located in the Savannah Region, Mole is Ghana's largest wildlife refuge and has the country's most viable elephant population. The park is home to more than 90 mammal species, including elephants, buffalo, kob, roan antelope and waterbuck.
One of Mole's highlights is its guided wildlife experience, which can include walking safaris and game viewing. The dry season, generally from November to March, can be particularly rewarding for wildlife viewing as animals gather around remaining water sources.
Getting there: Mole is about 146 km from Tamale and can be reached by road from Tamale. Visitors can also fly to Tamale and continue by road to the park.

2. Digya National Park
Located along Lake Volta, Digya National Park is another destination where visitors can encounter elephants in the wild. The park also supports buffalo, antelopes, monkeys and other wildlife.
Digya is better suited to adventurous travellers because access can be more challenging than Mole.
3. Bia National Park
For a different elephant experience, consider Bia National Park in Ghana's Western North Region. Unlike Mole's savannah elephants, Bia is home to African forest elephants, alongside chimpanzees, bongo and several primate species.
The park currently has limited tourist infrastructure, so travellers should plan access carefully and use appropriate local guidance.
