December in GH: Abeiku Santana Calls for Better Service as Tourists Arrive

Abeiku Santana, the Deputy CEO in charge of Marketing and Special Duties at the Ghana Tourism Authority, has explained why the Authority is deeply involved with people in the tourism industry.

According to him, tourism is not just about fun and entertainment. It is also about creating jobs, growing businesses, and helping people earn a living.

Speaking in an interview on GTV, Mr. Santana said their active engagement with stakeholders is intentional. He explained that when a visitor comes to a restaurant or hotel, the person comes with money to spend and time to enjoy themselves. The way they are treated, the quality of service they receive, and the attitude of staff can encourage them to spend even more.

He referred to a statement made by former President John Dramani Mahama during a media interaction, where he said service quality in Ghana’s tourism and hospitality sector is poor. According to President Mahama, when people go to some restaurants, workers do not even make an effort to encourage customers to spend more. Mr. Santana added that in some African countries, service providers deliberately create experiences that make visitors want to spend.

Inspired by this message, the Ghana Tourism Authority has stepped up its efforts. Mr. Santana said they have been visiting beaches, clubs, restaurants, and hotels, and also engaging drivers. With December being the peak season for tourism, many visitors come into the country during the holidays with money to spend. He stressed the need for service providers to improve how they treat guests by serving with purpose, smiling, being polite, neat, clean, proactive, and friendly.

Over the past few weeks and months, the Authority has rolled out several programmes and activities. This year’s “December in Gh” celebrations are not limited to Accra alone. Unlike previous years where activities were crowded in the capital, the festivities are being extended to other regions and regional capitals so everyone can enjoy and benefit from the season.

Mr. Santana concluded by saying that this initiative supports the vision of H.E President John Dramani Mahama, which is to position Ghana as a top destination for culture, heritage, lifestyle, and tourism throughout the year.
