GTA Moves Swiftly to Reassure Tourists After Viral Extortion Claims

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has reassured tourists and the general public that Ghana remains a safe and welcoming destination. This comes after a video went viral showing a group of African Americans claiming they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals posing as police officers.

In a press statement released on Monday, December 8, 2025, the Authority noted that it is aware of the video circulating on social media. It also confirmed that the relevant state security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority, have already begun investigations to uncover the truth behind the incident.

“We wish to state clearly that the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have already launched full investigations into the matter,” the statement said, adding that the agencies are handling the issue “with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.”

“As Ghana welcomes thousands of visitors for this year’s December in GH, GTA assures all travellers and the general public that the country remains a safe and trusted destination,” the statement noted.

According to the Authority, security arrangements across major tourist sites and events have been strengthened, working closely with law enforcement agencies and key stakeholders in the tourism sector.

“Our security systems—supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners—have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season,” the statement stressed.

The GTA also appealed to the public to remain calm and allow ongoing investigations to run their course.

“We urge the public to remain calm and allow the security agencies to complete their investigations,” it stated.

“Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the statement added.
