Our Job Is Bigger Than December In GH— Abeiku Santana Explains GTA’s Mission and Ghana’s Tourism Edge

The Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Abeiku Santana, has explained that the main role of the Authority is to promote and market Ghana as a tourist destination.

He also said the GTA is responsible for regulating tourism activities in the country through licensing and ensuring quality service delivery.

Abeiku Santana made these comments while speaking on the topic “December In GH 2025 Review: What Worked, What Didn’t, What Next?” on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, hosted by Kwame Dadzie. According to him, the GTA’s mandate goes beyond just December In GH. He explained that their duty is to consistently promote Ghana, both locally and internationally, while making sure all tourism operators follow the required standards and guidelines.

He noted that December In GH is only one of the many initiatives used to market Ghana. The large number of foreign visitors who come into the country during this period, he said, is a result of effective marketing, awareness creation, and activations done outside Ghana. He added that the Authority is also focused on promoting domestic tourism and strengthening Ghana’s image as the leading cultural and heritage destination in Africa.

During the discussion, host Kwame Dadzie asked whether the GTA would support an event organizer in Tamale who lacks financial resources. Abeiku Santana responded that support is possible, but it depends on certain factors. He explained that if a well-known organizer with a proven track record, such as DJ Mensah, presents a proposal, the GTA can offer financial support because there is confidence that the investment will bring results. However, for first-time organizers, the Authority may provide support in the form of logistics or other non-financial assistance.

Touching on competition from Nigeria during the December festivities, Abeiku Santana said competition is normal once a destination becomes successful. He stressed that Ghana is not afraid of competition and will continue to work closely with the private sector. He praised Ghanaian artistes for successfully organizing their own events and promoting the country. According to him, Ghana remains the number one tourist destination in West Africa, and Nigeria cannot surpass Ghana in that regard.
